Preamble

Nigerian Institute of Production Management (NIPM Nigeria) is committed to promoting excellence in production and operations management.

 

Nothing exits in reality without production. The management of production is critical to survival, growth and sustainability of the world and the success of every organization.

 

Production means all activities concerned with the use of resources in creating products and services. It involves transforming inputs into a more valuable outputs.

 

All organizations are production organizations.

These include government establishments, privately – owned companies and non-profit organizations.

 

Operations are performed by all entities or organizations, departments and individuals. Hence, the broad sphere of influence of the profession calls for multidisciplinary studies, cross learning, versatility, creativity, innovativeness, broadening of professional scope and adaptability.

 

This Code of Practice and Ethics sets out the standards of professional conduct, values, ethics and behaviours expected of professional certification holders and members of the Institute.

 

Article 1: Professional Competence

1. Members shall uphold the principles of operational excellence including the maximization of efficiency of people, systems and processes for competitive advantage.

 

2. Members shall maintain and enhance their professional competence through ongoing learning and development.

 

3. Members shall adopt the POMBOK and SCOBOK models developed for NIPM by Dr Olaniyi Opanuga as the basic guide or template coupled with updated versions and best practices shared at NIPM programmes for training and professional development and to raise the standards of knowledge and skills of their teams.

 

4. Members shall stay up-to-date with best practices, new technologies, and industry trends in production  and operations management including all roles and functions associated with Operations Management such as General Operations, Public Sector Operations, Business Operations, Industrial Sector Operations, Human Resources Operations, Manufacturing/Plant Operations, Logistics and Transportation Operations, HSE and Security Operations, Project Production Operations, Supply Chain Operations, Quality Operations, Procurement Operations, Maintenance Operations, Warehousing Operations, Sales and Distribution Operations, Financial Operations et.cetera.

 

Article 2: Integrity and Honesty

1. Members shall act with integrity and honesty in all their professional dealings.

 

2. Members shall not engage in any behavior that could bring the Institute or the profession into disrepute.

 

Article 3: Confidentiality

1. Members shall maintain confidentiality in all matters related to their clients, employers or colleagues.

 

2. Members shall not disclose confidential information without the consent of the relevant parties.

 

Article 4: Respect for Others

1. Members shall treat others with respect and dignity, regardless of their background, culture or position.

 

2. Members shall not engage in harassment, bullying or discriminatory behavior.

 

Article 5: Compliance with Laws and Regulations

1. Members shall comply with all relevant laws, regulations and industry standards in their professional practice.

 

2. Members shall not engage in any behavior that could result in harm to people, the environment, or property.

 

Article 6: Continuous Improvement

1. Members shall strive for continuous improvement in their professional practice.

 

2. Members shall seek feedback from clients, employers or colleagues and use it to improve their performance.

 

Article 7: Professional Development

1. Members shall engage in ongoing professional development to maintain and enhance their skills and knowledge.

 

2. Members shall participate in training, workshops, conferences, and other professional development activities.

 

Article 8: Certification and Re- certification 

1. Professional Certification and Membership Certificate issued by the Institute are subject to replacement every two (2) years. It shall be unlawful and unethical for any graduate or member of the Institute not to get Re- certified or continue to use or present expired Certification or Certificate.

 

2. Holders of the Institute’s Professional Certification and Membership Certificate shall return the credential to the Institute for replacement at least two (2) months to the end of the validity period.

 

3. Holders of the Institute’s Professional Certification and Membership Certificate shall fulfill all the obligations associated with Certification and Re- certification such as compliance with this code of practice and ethics, training, continuous professional development and self- improvement, passing re-certification examinations or tests and payment of applicable fees.

 

Article 9: Reporting Unprofessional Conduct

1. Members shall report any unprofessional conduct by fellow members to the Institute.

 

2. Members shall cooperate with the Institute in investigating and addressing any allegations of unprofessional conduct.

 

Article 10: Sanctions for Non-Compliance

1. Members who fail to comply with this Code of Practice and Ethics may face sanctions, including suspension or expulsion from the Institute.

 

2. The Institute shall investigate all allegations of non-compliance and take appropriate actions.

 

Article 11: Review and Revision

1. This Code of Practice and Ethics shall be reviewed and revised regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective.

 

2. Members shall be informed on any changes to the Code of Practice and Ethics.

 

Conclusion.

By adopting this Code of Practice and Ethics, members of NIPM Nigeria demonstrate their commitment to upholding the highest standards of professional conduct, ethics, and behaviour in production and operations management.
