ROLE OF A PROFESSIONAL BODY

 

The role of a professional body is to ensure that any person who is registered as its Member or issued a particular credential must be able to defend it.

 

That means the person must have gained the required level of professional proficiency or competence in the field of practice. That’s what Charter is about.

 

In most parts of the world, CERTIFICATION is emphasized. It is not necessarily about Charter but proficiency and competence. That is why, for instance, tailors or mechanics could demonstrate their competencies in their professions through their work rather than displaying their Certificates of Apprenticeship or proving their Graduation from a Technical College.

 

 

No one bothers about the need for Chartered Lawyers, Chartered Medical Doctors or Chartered Surgeons, yet they handle intricate things. A Charter Pilot doesn’t have to pass through a Chartered professional body.

PROFESSIONS CAN BE REGULATED WITHOUT CHARTER

 

Though the Charter confers some rights and privileges, the most important is the power to regulate a particular professional practice. NIPM has the power to regulate Production and Operations Management practice in Nigeria including the powers to establish a Registration Council and some other arms, centres or other organisations in order to advance directly or indirectly its objects of interest.

 

 

SOME PROFESSIONAL BODIES LIKE NIPM

 

Professional bodies that has regulatory powers like the Nigerian Institute of Production Management ( NIPM) include Nigerian Society of Engineers/ COREN, Nigerian Institute of Architects/ARCON, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria/NAIP/ PCN, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners/TOPREC, Medical And Dental Council of Nigeria, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria and so on. Some these bodies have registration councils that regulate professional practice in their respective fields of work but they are not Chartered. Yet they are maintaining standards and discipline among their members. Their qualifications are valid.

 

 

 

 

DON’T BE DECEIVED BY CHARTER

 

Employers are wise. They want performance not a piece of paper.

 

You don’t get a job or get promoted because you are Certified or Chartered.You need to have brains and manners. Knowledge, Skills and Attitude are the things that matter.That’s why you will go through selection or promotion interviews.Paper qualifications ( Chartered or Certified) will only take you to a point but what you know, your performance and character will take over from that point.NIPM builds professional capabilities for career and entrepreneurial success.

 

 

 

 

Don’t be deceived by misinformation over Charter. Any organisations claiming rights to issuing “Chartered” qualification in Production Management or Operations Management in Nigeria is fake. Don’t fall for such cheap tricks!.
