CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT (CED), NIPM.

Centre for Entrepreneurship Development- Nigerian Institute of Production Management.

Secure your future now.

That’s our slogan at the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development(C ED) of the Nigeran Institute of Production Management (NIPM).

According to Dr Olaniyi Opanuga, President, Nigerian Institute of Production Management the first thing that comes to mind when a decision to start and manage own business is to be made is production be it of goods or a services, rooted in market gap analysis or the weak links in the supply and demand chains.

FROM PUBLIC SERVICE TO OWN BUSINESS

Speaking at a National Pre-Retirement Training Workshop organised for Senior Public Sector Officers by Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR),The Presidency in 2006 Dr Opanuga, an international management consultant who became an entrepreneur over 40 years ago said ” Strategic career planning, self- development and visioning are critical to the prevention of post- retirement crisis……how to start and manage your own business is easy once you have the right knowledge, skills and attitude, the ability to learn and respond to change, the capacity to identify opportunities, understand how to use production to fill the gaps in the marketplace through necessity cognition, commitment to problem solving, inventiveness, customer needs Identification and this calls for effective adoption of creativity, innovation and technology…By technology I mean simple technology that is suitable for small business operations….Strategic career planning from the individual standpoint includes planning for retirement right from the day one starts working as an employee”.

OPANUGA ADVOCATES APPLIED EDUCATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS PANACEA FOR SUCCESS OF UNDERGRADUATES

In a Seminar paper presented at the School of Science And Technology, Babcock University, Ilisan- Remo, Ogun State on March 1,  2011 Dr. Opanuga linked various careers and professions vis a vis the challenges of technological development and Industrialisation in Nigeria, the high hopes and mindsets of students, graduate unemployment crisis while advising the lecturers to align pedagogy to changing industrial landscape, labour market and manpower requirements and societal imperatives.

Also, he spoke about the need for applied education and entrepreneurial orientation in other for the students to be able to face the future with confidence by building capacity for self- employment after graduation. He advised them against being victims of circumstances.

PRODUCTION EDUCATION AS A POWERFUL FORCE : EMPLOYMENT IN A COMPANY IS NOT FOR EVER.

From a small trader in 1977 Aliko Dangote now controls a multinational conglomerate comprising leading manufacturing companies in major industrial sectors, operating across Africa.

Production mentality is about looking for problems to solve in your environment or elsewhere, finding out and providing what people need.Production is the key to self- reliance and true freedom. Before you start thinking about finance or marketing you want to start from your present circumstances, abilities, potentials or talents in relation to available opportunities and threats”….Be self- reliant, be provoked by the challenges confronting you ….be driven  by confidence, faith and passion … Billionaires like Aliko Dangote didn’t start big. *Start doing something meaningful but legal and profitable, however micro and employ others in due course.”Dr Opanuga remarked at the training centre of an international manufacturing company in Lagos while conducting a training on Life After Paid Employment in 2019.

“But you need that eagerness, consciousness, interest, focus and determination backed by knowledge to be able to fully identify and optimally exploit available opportunities”. Opanuga pointed out.

At NIPM we believe in education that practically puts more than food on the table and creates more than jobs. Education should make people very well informed and professionally skilled with the right attitude to become financially self- dependent. Education from NIPM CED’s perspective should create wealth and development. Education that cannot help you to secure your own future without relying on others for jobs is cheer waste.

KILL UNEMPLOYMENT, OWN YOUR BUSINESS!

The rate of graduate unemployment and the joblessness of young school leavers are alarming globally. It is even more worrisome in Africa and Nigeria in particular. Developing nations are

trying to grapple with the need to meet the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target for Education.

United Nations Educational  Scientific And Cultural Organisation ( UNESCO) which leads the Global Education 2030 Agenda through  SDG on Education ( Goal 4) has peace and security as its objective and education is one of the means of achieving this. UNESCO believes that education is a human right for all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DESTINY

Achieving decent employment, eradicating poverty and hunger, improved living standards, empowering people and ensuring prosperity are some of the ideals that are recognised by the United Nations. But individual countries must ensure the implementation of appropriate public policies. Given today’s economic challenges and inadequate job opportunities private individuals need to take their destiny in their own hands.
