The myriad of challenges facing manufacturers in Nigeria in the face of the fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), globalization and technology advances have been a subject of heated national debate over the years. Whether at the level of the government, the manufacturers association, the chambers of commerce and the board room, all fingers are pointing at the cost of doing business as one of the main problems impacting negatively on competitiveness and profitability of manufacturing organizations.

As the professional body regulating the standards of practice of Production and Operations Management in Nigeria we are concerned. We have carried out intensive research across the various sectors of the nation’s economy on the subject. One of our findings is that many organizations rely mostly on the prescriptive model (which is ineffective and unsustainable) while they jettison the professional standards. Rather than talking about the unabating external variables that everyone has mastered we need to focus on “self-help” approaches by looking inwards and dealing with the internal variables under our control. But, we need the right knowledge, competencies and tools.

As operations practitioners, we are meeting at this National Workshop to rescue our organizations from the shackles of manufacturing, supply chain and logistics costs which have continually and unceasingly undermined bottomline figures and growth in a marketing environment where consumers are highly price sensitive.
