The Scope of Production and Operations Management has been defined by Nigerian Institute of Production Management (NIPM).

NIPM has created a mechanism called “Production and Operations Body of Knowledge (POMBOK)” and “Supply Chain Operations Body of Knowledge (SCOBOK)” as framework to provide standards for learning and development, certification and the improvement of professional practice. These frameworks which Dr. Olaniyi Opanuga, NIPM President calls NIPM Body of Knowledge (NBK) provide the needed guidance for students/learners, teachers/trainers, consultants, HR executives and all production, logistics, supply chain and operations management professionals in public sectors/government organizations, agricultural, manufacturing, construction, mining, energy and service industries. NBK is particularly useful in curriculum development, training design, L & D interventions and efforts to improve people, systems, processes, technology and operations generally.

According to Dr. Opanuga, NIPM education, training, certification, diploma and membership programmes and the associated curriculum syllabuses, contents, learning outcomes, examinations and code of conduct are based on the NIPM Body of Knowledge (NBK) which correlates with the competencies required for effective performance of all operations management professionals in their roles. NBK clarifies applicable knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes from the foundations to strategic decisions required for effective job performance of all production, supply chain and operations management professionals on a daily basis.
