NIPM Education and Training

Nigerian Institute of Production Management (NIPM) offers professional training courses, workshops, seminars, certification, diploma, advanced diploma, PGD and membership programmes for professional education, career development and entrepreneurial success of persons involved in the management of operations across the maritime industry, a part of the transport sector. The sector is governed by international conventions, regional trade agreements and national laws. NIPM is poised to impact the nation’s maritime sector for global competitiveness.

Nigeria’s Maritime Transport Operations

The Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Shipper’s Council (NSC), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have a lot of work to do. Nigeria’s Maritime sector needs to be positioned to drive economic development, play a key role in international trade and optimize its potential to contribute more to the Nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through professional management of ports and terminal operations, production facilities (construction/building) development and maintenance of facilities and infrastructures for integrated multi-modal operations.

Our Maritime and Operations Managers need to be a Professionals

Our Nation’s seaports require managers with operations management competencies for improved efficiency in line with professional standards both on the part of regulatory agencies who need to ensure transparency and speed; those who need to provide maritime services and equipment, those who need to keep berth production at peak efficiency and maintain effective stevedoring, storage and general flow of cargo to and from the port; the shipping company managers who need to adopt technology systems for improved visibility, faster documentation and delivery of containers, the terminal managers who need to ensure quality, safe and profitable production of the port terminal services including planning, passengers and cargo handling, transhipment, storage, delivery, inventory management, asset utilization, customer service processes; managers who should ensure that port facilities are properly maintained with all the utilities in perfect working condition; managers who should ensure total safety and security of people and goods et cetera.

NIPM Advocacy

 As part of NIPM advocacy there is need for far reaching reforms to make our ports and the maritime sector more efficient, responsive and accountable.

Threat to Investment, Supply Chain and Employment

We can do without the obnoxious, energy sapping, frustrating and resource wasting delays and congestions at our ports and yards. Our ports are not merely meant for collecting revenue with numerous government agencies that often times work with bureaucratic red tape and at cross purposes but to offer efficient service, trade facilitation models that will make positive impact in the entire supply chain, excellent customer experience and operate in line with international integrity standards. We need to operate by port governance principles that ensure optimal performance for maximum benefit of all the stakeholders.
