The College Of Production And Operations Management- COPOM has been deepening the knowledge of safety, health and environmental, (HSE) management among industrial workers in the country, Speaking at a 2-day intensive course on occupational safety, health and environmental management (OSHEM), organized for the staff of Hafar Industries Company Limited,Dr Olaniyi Opanuga, The Piorist And Dean Of Studies Of Said The College Of Production And Operations Management (COPOM) Institute Of Safety, Health And Environmental Management (ISHEM) aims to strengthen the capability of industrial organizations with the goal of achieving zero accident all year round.

(HSE or SHE training contributes in no small measure to accident prevention in the factories. Also, it promotes improved health and welfare of the workforce as well as environmental protection. We are at Haffar to provide managers, supervisors and workers the knowledge and skills required to identify risks around hazards and work safely, He remarked that without the required knowledge and skills workers are likely to create hazards that could put them or others at risks learning, especially through recognized and authorities institutions such as HSE management performance’ Dr Opanuga remarked.

A team of COPOM consultants led by Dr Opanuga had earlier carried out a safety audit of the industry followed by a guided tour of the factory departments and sections led by the Personnel/ Administrative manager, Mrs. Bolanle Bada.

Participants were drawn from the spinning, general processing, maintenance, and engineering dyeing and store departments as well as from the safety committee.

Speaking to daily independent, Dr Opanuga said COPOM HSE education and training covers different levels. Ranging from awareness training, roles, responsibilities and accountability training, specialist environment, health, and safety (EHS) or industry and process- specific programmess to risk management, hazards identification, assessment, prevention and control as well as the management of safety, health and environment (SHE) to ensure compliance with the laws, enforcement of regulations standard and records, procedures governing operations, communications, inspection, reporting, emergencies, and general security whether they relate to employers and own employees or contractors, temporary workers or other persons in the environment. In addition we assist organizations by recommending improvement where necessary and advice on potential safety, health and environmental issues when establishing a factory or when an organization is a about making significant changes.

In this presentation, Mr. Olasunkami opanuga had stated the importance of health and safety and the roles for effective prevention of industrial accident. He also stressed the need to identify and control hazards, and near misses. According to the General Manager of Haffar, Mr. Ray Jushar Ranjan, one major challenge facing the company is unfair competition whereby cheaper and low quality products are into the  country forcing the company to reduce capacity utilization from three shifts to one shift and downsizing from over 300 workers to about 100.

Also speaking at the event was the safety maintenance and manager, Mr Femi Faparus who said COPOM training was an eye opener whose delivery quality has surpassed management expectation while urging Dr Opanuga and his team to continue to impart knowledge to workers for enhanced industrial development. Speaking on behalf the trainers Mr. Erinle, the, assistant production manager and the protein branch co-coordinator of COPOM ISHEM said COPOM management deserved commendation for the practicality and industrial relevance of its world class programmer and industrial relevance of its world class programme.

At the opening of the course were the senior   team representing the College Of Production &Operations Management- COPOM Institute Of Safety, Health And Environmental Management (ISHEM) were Dr Olaniyi Opanuga, the Dean of Studies,  Mr. Olasunkami Opanuga, Associate Consultant Of COPOM And Mr. Aderele Adeyemi, Assistant Registar.
